THE ULTIMATE SUCKLER BREED

Salers Crossbred Heifer Sale Gort 2017

The Salers Cattle Society held their 12th annual crossbred heifer show and sale in Gort Mart on Saturday 21st October. Having gone from strength to strength in recent years and with ever increasing demand for Salers females, it was decided that a stand-alone Saturday sale was a better option to the normal Thursday evening sale. This proved to be an inspired move with the daytime sale proving popular with buyers and sellers alike.

There were classes for weanling heifers, maiden heifers and in-calf heifers with a large entry in each class. Organisers feared that Storm Brian may have proven a deterrent to buyers but such fears proved unfounded.

In front of a large attendance, quality lots met with strong demand. Weanling heifers averaged €900 with a top of €1220. Maiden heifers averaged €1110 with a top price of €1500 while the in-calf heifers sold to a maximum of €1900 with an average of €1620.

Prize-winners on the day included Michael Kelly with the 1st placed in-calf heifer, Michael O’Sullivan with the top maiden heifer and Declan Bell, Clarecastle with 1st  in the weanling heifer section.

It should be noted that, due to exceptional off farm sales reported by pedigree breeders, the planned November Pedigree Show and Sale had to be cancelled. Farmers looking to purchase pedigree breeding stock should visit www.irishsalers.com for a list of Salers breeders in their area.
