The Salers Cattle Society held their Annual Spring Show and Sale in Tullamore Mart last Saturday. The cattle were all pre-sale inspected for the haltered and un-haltered classes and the Bulls were Fertility tested.
With the sun shining it brought a great attendance, to see 75% sale clearance similar to last years Spring Sale.
The overall top price of €3,500. went to Reserve Champion Male “Ballyconneely Poseidon” exhibited by Sean & Terence Sweeney, Dunloughan Road, Bunowen, Ballyconneely, Co. Galway, at just 2 years old, he has a Replacement Index value of €165. (Reliability 46%), 5 stars across all beef breeds and 4 stars within Salers Breed. He is a son of A.I. bull, “RIO” and out of Dam “Corlurgan Gleda”.
The Male Champion of the show sold for €3,000. “Lisbawn Paul”, exhibited by Brian McNulty, Lisbawn, Swinford, Co. Mayo, a 15 month old bull with a Replacement Index value €145. and 5 stars across all beef breeds and 5 stars within the Salers breed for Terminal Index, sired by A.I “Vanlooy” S1545 and out of Dam “Sligo Miata”.
The average price for Bulls was €2,350.
The Female Champion of the show went to “Connemara Riona” sold for €2,400 to a Northern Ireland Salers breeder. She was exhibited by John O’Malley, Bohesial, Recess, Co. Galway. Just over 14 months old, sired by A.I “Bronson” S1209 and from Dam “Connemara Laoise”. She has 5 stars across all beef breeds and €122 Replacement Index value.
The Reserve Champion Female was won by “Glenmore Robin” owned by Thomas Mulcahy, Glenmore, Strand, Co. Limerick sold for €2,200. She is sired by his own stock bull “Glenmore Oscar” and grand sire is Vaillant one of the top 3 Maternal A.I sires in Ireland. Her Dam is an imported French heifer “Eclipse”. At just 11 months old she has €164. Replacement €uro value and has 5 stars Replacement Index across all beef breeds and 4 stars within the Salers breed.
The overall top priced Female was 14 month old “Highfield Rebel” sold for €2,500. which was exhibited by Niall O’Connell, Toames East, Macroom, Co. Cork. Replacement €uro value €186. and both 5 stars within the breed and across all beef breeds. This heifer is sired by his own imported French bull “Icare” and Dam “Highfield Maria”.
The average price for maiden heifers was €1,800.
The top priced in-calf heifer, 1st in her class, a 26 month old heifer “Highfield Petal” which sold for €2,400, out of A.I. Sire “Whitebog Convener” SA4033 and Dam “Highfield Julie”, exhibited also by Niall O’Connell, Macroom, Co. Cork.
In the un-haltered section the top price made €2,450. for “Cuan Princess”. This 2 year old heifer came 2nd in her class and was bred by Tadgh Crowley, Ballydwan West, Stradbally, Co. Waterford. Replacement Index value €188. and both 5 stars within Salers breed and across all beef breeds. Sired by stock bull “Knottown Hermes” and Dam “Cuan Kylie”
The youngest weanling that sold made €1,550. an 8 month old “Ballygar Rebecca”, sired by “Sligo Norman” and Dam “Dunlo Juanita”, bred by Padraic McConn, Ballygar, Co. Galway.
Average price for weanling heifers made €1,570.
The Salers heifer at the sale with the overall highest Replacement Index value of €197. with both 5 stars within Salers breed and across all beef breeds was “Cuan Profit” a 2 year old heifer which sold for €1,900. Sired by stockbull “Knottown Hermes” and Dam “Cuan Jane”.
The Salers male at the sale with the overall highest Replacement Index value of €181. with both 5 stars within Salers breed and across all beef breeds was “Ashbury Pluto” a 23month old bull which was un-sold. Sired by stockbull “Gavroche” and Dam French imported “Urfa”.
