A Note About the Sale

The annual Salers Society heifer sale held in Gort Mart, Co. Galway is now in its 18th year. In that time the sale has developed and evolved into what is now a firm fixture in the diaries of very many suckler farmers who want to source top quality replacements for their suckler herds. What began as a highly successful commercial heifer sale and was run accordingly for many years, now has a very successful pedigree element too. The pedigree and commercial sections complement each other, and the availability of a large selection of both pedigree and commercial heifers is proving to be a huge draw for buyers.

The pre-inspection of pedigree heifers for the elite pedigree section is of the utmost importance in order to ensure the integrity of the pedigree section and to ensure that the best pedigree heifers are on show to represent the breed and available at the sale. Quality, temperament and body condition are all very important factors when presenting any animal for sale, but are of even greater importance when seeking to advance and promote a pedigree breed. Pedigree breeders who do not wish to prepare heifers for this section are welcome to enter pedigree heifers in the commercial section and can declare them as pedigree at time of sale. We will not, however, run a separate section for non-inspected pedigrees.

While this sale is a heifer sale, it has always been held in the spirit of trying to facilitate as many Salers breeders as possible who want to sell stock. In the past, organisers have facilitated the sale of cows and cows with calves at foot upon request. We are happy to facilitate such stock again if requested to do so. However, in order to ensure the integrity of this heifer sale, such stock will be sold after both pedigree and commercial heifers. The same deadline of Friday 16th September applies.

The sale is organised and promoted for the most part by a small group of people in a voluntary capacity. Your cooperation in terms of returning entry forms by the deadline of Friday 16th September is greatly appreciated. This helps us to promote the sale more effectively and facilitates the creation of a catalogue for the pedigree section which can be made available in advance of the sale. A print out of tag numbers for the commercial heifers will be available upon request at the mart on the day of sale.

We are very fortunate to have the support and backing of Gort Mart manager Bernie Fahey and her team. The professionalism and cooperation of the team in Gort helps make the sale the success it is. Despite all the uncertainties in agriculture and livestock farming at the moment, the buzz of positivity from the large attendance at last year’s sale was a tonic and we hope to replicate that again this year. We look forward to meeting buyers and sellers, both old and new, in Gort this October at what we are certain will be another very successful sale of quality Salers breeding heifers.
