SALERS SHOW & SALE REPORT 2018

The Salers Cattle Society held their Annual Spring Show and Sale in Mountrath Mart last Saturday. The cattle were all pre-sale inspected for the haltered and un-haltered classes and the Bulls were Fertility tested.
A sale clearance of 72% similar to last years Spring Sale.

The overall top price of €2,700. went to an unhaltered female heifer, 1st in her class, “Clewbay Sheila” exhibited by Thomas McGreal, Prospect, Westport, Co. Mayo. At just 14 months old, she has a Replacement Index value of €175. 5 stars across all beef breeds and 5 stars within Salers Breed. She is a daughter off the bull Laois Nathan and out of Dam “Clewbay Jill”.

The Male Champion of the show sold for €2,500. “Sligo Rudde”, exhibited by Bernard Hunt, Sligo Salers, Lisbaleely, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, a 19 month old bull with a Replacement Index value €143. and 5 stars within the Salers breed for Terminal Index, sired by A.I “Halley” S3006 and out of Dam “Sligo Heitti”.

The Reserve Champion Male, “Woodview Sandy”, a 14 month old bull, owned by Eddie Brennan, Coon East, Coon, Co. Kilkenny. Sired by “Ballymackeogh Lucas” KKB and Dam “Kilshanny India”. He has a Replacement Index value €135. with 5 stars across all beef Breeds. He was unsold.

The average price for Bulls was €2,300.

The Female Champion of the show went to “Highfield Sultana” sold for €2,000. She was exhibited by Niall O’Connell, Toames East, Macroom, Co. Cork. Just 15 months old, sired by French Stock Bull “Icare” and from Dam “Highfield Ophelia”. She has 5 stars across all beef breeds and €130 Replacement Index value.

The Reserve Champion Female was incalf “Sligo Pepita” owned by Bernard Hunt, Sligo Salers, Lisbaleely, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, sold for €2,500. She is sired by A.I. Bull “Garou”. Her Dam is Sligo Hearty. At 2yrs 4 months old she has €156. Replacement Index €uro value and has 5 stars Replacement Index across all beef breeds and 4 stars within the Salers breed.

The average price for maiden heifers was €2,000.

The youngest weanling that sold made €1,500. a 9 month old “Dunlo Salome”, sired by “Dunlo Nelson” and Dam “Dunlo Oriana”, bred by Kathleen & Michael Ward, Mackney, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.
Average price for weanling heifers made €1,500.

The Salers heifer at the sale with the overall highest Replacement Index value of €218. with both 5 stars within Salers breed and across all beef breeds was “Ashbury Risque” an incalf heifer which was unsold. Sired by stockbull “Knottown Leo” and French Dam “Union”.

The Salers male at the sale with the overall highest Replacement Index value of €192. with both 5 stars within Salers breed and across all beef breeds was “Sligo Rebel” a 17 month old bull which was un-sold. Sired by A.I “Ulsan” SA2189 and Dam “Sligo Leila”.
A total of 8 Females were sold to Northern Ireland Salers breeders.
