Salers Show & Sale Report Spring 2016:

The Salers Cattle Society held their Spring show and sale in Tullamore on Saturday 9th April. This sale was different to the usual Show & Sale as it had some unhaltered animals as well as haltered.

The numbers at the sale were down this year due to breeders selling most of their cattle at home with such demand for high index heifers and bulls this year. It was obvious that farmers are paying more for high replacement index animals.

A good demand for Salers with a sale clearance of 75% sold.  The overall top price of €3,900. went to the Champion Female “Knottown Olwyn 2”,  exhibited by Joe and Richard  Fortune, Knottown, Wexford, a 17 month old maiden heifer, with the overall highest replacement index value of €210. and 5 stars within the breed. She was sired by their own stock bull, “Charlemagn” which was imported from France in 2007, and the Dam is “Knottown Joyce”.

Reserve Female Champion went to a 13 month old heifer “Sligo Prada” exhibited by Bernard hunt, Gurteen, Co. Sligo. Sired by “Bronson” (S1209) and the Dam is “Sligo Molly”. She was sold for €1,700.

The Champion Male of the show was “Powerstown Oscar” a 2 year old son of “Bronson” (S1209) exhibited by Patrick and Michael Cronin, Powerstown House, Mallow, Co. Cork, and out of the Dam “Sligo Kade”. He was unsold.

Reserve Male Champion was “Brownhall Pauric”, sired by AI Bull “Bronson” (S1209) and the Dam is “Brownhall Grace”. Exhibited by Jimmy McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal. He was sold for €2,000.

Top priced Bull “Ballyrea Pat”, was a 5 star bull within the breed, with the highest replacement index value in the male section of €181. He sold for €2,225. A “Jovial” son bred by Michael Cahill, Ballyara, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo and out of the Dam “Ballyrea Lucy”.

The average price for Bulls was €2,025.

The in-calf heifer which sold for €2,000. was  ”Castlebar Olivia” a 26 month old heifer sired by “Bonaparte” (PZB), and the Dam is “Castlebar Kaoife”, she was exhibited by Padraic Lavelle, Knocknaskibbole, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.

In the unhaltered maiden heifer section, top price of €2,100.00 went to “Brownhall Paula”, a March 2015 heifer who was 2nd in her class, she had 5 stars within the breed and a replacement index value of €174.. Owned by Jimmy McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal, sired by his stock Bull “Ibis” imported from France in 2013, and the Dam is “Brownhall Jasimen”

Jimmy McGroarty who also owned the youngest heifer born on 28th March 2015 was sold for €1,700.00 “Brownhall Peach”, she was 1st in her class. Sired by stock Bull “Ibis”, and her Dam is Touraine. Heifers average price €1,711.
